Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a real thing believed to be caused by decreased light exposure in winter. The winter blues may be something more than just a passing flat feeling.
Studies show that about one in 300 Australians will experience the clinical condition known as SAD. This usually happens in winter around the time of the shortest day of the year which is next week (22 June).
Its not known what actually triggers SAD but it has been suggested it is a form of depression. What is known is that it’s linked to decreased exposure to sunlight. It’s more common in women, young people, those who have a family history of depression and residents of aged care facilities.
It also keeps coming back each year. If you feel that now that it’s winter, your mood has dropped and you start to experience the symptoms of SAD, you should not accept this as normal but understand that you can do things to get on top of it.
It’s important to know that unlike depression, people with SAD usually don’t have thoughts of self-harm or feeling worthless. The following symptoms are associated with SAD.
- sweet or sugar craving
- difficulty with concentration
- depressed mood
- weight gain
- lack of energy
- decreased libido
- binge eating
If you are experiencing the above symptoms, there are some lifestyle changes that should help.
Get outside more and get some winter sunlight. Rug up and take a brisk walk, or join a gym or take up sport.
Some researchers have suggested an increase in Vitamin D is helpful. Vitamin D is naturally produced in our skin after exposure to sunlight and there are plenty of Vitamin D receptors in our brain. Vitamin D supplementation makes perfect sense. Go Vita members can get 30% discount on the NutriVital Vitamin D3 product for the month of June, by using your Go Mag voucher.
Visit friends or family, why not meet for lunch at one of our local eateries.

Cheer up, you don’t need to feel SAD.
